This UDL guideline addresses the “how” of learning. Student opportunities to demonstrate their learning should be provided through methods that are not limited to taking tests or writing papers. These may include physical activities, use of technologies, verbal or visual communications, and independent goal setting. Multiple expressions of knowledge allow students to explain the breadth of their knowledge and comprehension and their ability to monitor their own progress and professional growth.

Tips to support action and expression of learning

Create learning environments and activities that:

Provide choices in demonstration methods. Students can review learning objectives and plan for methods to demonstrate learning through written, verbal, or other creative means. Consider the multiple means of representation of information and allow students to act on their learning in similar ways.
Provide alternative formats in written assessments. When written exams are utilized, use multiple-question formats that facilitate both critical thinking and justification or explanation of this thinking.
Provide alternative formats in verbal assessments. Student presentations may include live, recorded, or activity-based expression. Promote creativity.
Provide alternative formats in assessments of demonstrated skills. When possible, consider environments or scenarios that reflect realistic clinical practice. Consider role-playing, simulated patient experiences, or interactions with clients in supervised community-based settings.
Be open-minded and creative. When assessment methods cannot be altered due to specific learning objectives or accreditation standards, allow students to assist in problem-solving ways to demonstrate learning.
